The English pub is traditionally an important part of village life and we are there for you from every stage of life: From baby showers to funeral wakes via everything in between: christernings, birthday parties, engagement parties, weddings, anniversaries, office parties to retirement dos and reunions and anything else you want to celebrate, let us take care of it for you.

At the heart of the village of Digswell, we’re easy to get to with excellent road links to Hertford, Welwyn Garden City, Welwyn, Knebworth and Stevenage, plus the easiest 30 minute train ride to central London from Welwyn North Station right next door. Yet, we are the perfect escape from the maddening crowds. A relaxed and beautiful quintessentially English village setting in the middle of a welcoming community.

Although a large spacious pub with a big capacity, we’re broken down into smaller more intimate areas that allow all gatherings to feel much more intimate.

We have versatile spaces to suit all occasions and all sizes of party. At the Cowper Arms larger groups can book exclusive use of our restaurant area which seats up to 50 people comfortably for a sit down meal and can easily fit 80 people for a standing buffet with the option to expand onto the patio. But for a more intimate experience our “snug” end with an open fire is the perfect spot for a drinks reception of up to 40 people. Or 20 people can comfortably enjoy a sit down meal in “coffee corner.”

Got 100+ people? Well take over the whole of the bar side.

Need a whole venue? Our sister pub The White Horse in sleepy Burnham Green is available to book and if there’s enough of you we can close the whole pub giving you exclusive use of a cosy bar that can easily accommodate up to 200 people, and includes a huge beer garden with picturesque views of the rolling fields of Hertfordshire.

You can, of course, just hire the garden for your summer party, and fill it with your friends. The kids have plenty of space to run around, and plenty of shelter and cover from the elements, with patio heaters and the warmth of our Mediterranean style garden kitchen.

Whatever your occasion, we’re happy to offer catering and a space for you to celebrate. Our spaces are also available to hire for meetings, presentations, hobby groups, book clubs – we even have a model railway set up in the restaurant a few times throughout the year.

For weddings, christenings and funerals, we are located within easy reach of Digswell Village Church, St John’s the Evangelist, Catholic Church of the Holy Family, Harwood Crematorium, St Mary’s Church, Welwyn Evangelical Church.

Options start with a finger buffet including all the classic favourites, Sandwiches, Chips, Sausage Rolls, Scotch Eggs, Pork Pies, Chicken Wings, Quiches, Salads, Olives, Hummus and more.

Or a selection from our tapas selection offering a hot buffet of fantastic Cowper Arms favourites, from Sandor’s homemade Lamb Koftas to Calamari Rings, Mozzarella Sticks, Jalapeno Bombs, Spicy Wings, Chorizo, Tempura Prawns, Breaded Mushrooms and much more, customised to suit your needs.

You can also try our pizza offer, the White Horse’s Garden Bar with Mediterranean inspired meals, or we can build a custom menu for a sit down meal to suit your events and your tastes.

All wedding breakfasts are bespoke to the happy couple. Our chef patron Franko will take a personal interest in every party and will invite you to a one-one-one meeting to come up with a menu that reflects the couple and then we’ll invite you back for a taste before the big day. While party planner Emily will work out all the details of giving you the perfect party from the bar to the decorations, table plans, layouts and all those special bits and pieces that are unique to your wedding.
